ByeBye Mop and Bucket!!!

by A. Day 2003-05-09, 317 people found this review helpful
I admit it I finally bought something because I saw it on an infomercial and all I can say is that I am very impressed!! I have 2 dogs, a husband that works in the oilfield, me the messy cook, and I live in sandy red dirt west Texas. This thing can really handle it all. I also like how the mop pad also goes over my 1/4 round on the baseboards and gets them too.In addition I love that I don't have to immediatly leave the area after I have mopped because the fumes from the chemicals are so strong... as my experience was when I tried the swiffer wetjet. I had debated as to whether to get this with the Bissell CatchAll or to get the Hoover Floormate and so far I am very happy with th choice I have made.
One hint I found out when using this product that is not mentioned in the instructions is that it works best when you pull it backwards instead of forwards.( like I do when using my hoover steamvac widepath) I noticed when I was pushing forwards all the steam seamed to be coming out the back of the mop head and when I pulled it backwards all the steam went apparantly on the floor because I barely saw it coming out but I could certainly see the difference. After using this product I really can say that my floor is clean. not only does it look clean , but I know that the steam is killing bacteria and I can believe it or not , breathe better. I dont know if this is because it is like being around a vaporizer or because it is killing bacteria and dustmites but it does.

WHen all of these new and improved moppping gadgets hit the market I had been hopfull because hey, I admit I hate mopping. After mopping while the floor was still wet it never failed that either my dogs or my husband when just walk on it and get it dirty again. So I tried the swiffer wetjet and was not impressed because of the strong smell of the cleaner, having to buy cleaner and pads all the time, did not get ground in stuff very well, and Knowing that I was only degreasing and not disinfecting the floor. This steam mop is cost effeciant because I don't have to keep buying cleaner or pads. It is reccomened to use distilled water to maximize the use of the water filter but 1$ /gallon compared to $3/liter isn't bad and I may end up getting one of those pur things to not have to do even that. I honestly recommend this product and hope that this may help someone considering buying it!

for people who hate mopping

I love a clean floor, but I hate mopping so much that I put it off and put it off. Kitchen floors in a busy household should be mopped AT LEAST once a week, but wringing a heavy wet mop and dealing with all that dirty water - yuck. So when I saw this, I thought that if it lived up to its billing, it would be the answer to my prayers. (By the way - the swiffer doesn't get the floor clean at all to my satisfaction, costs too much and leaves unwanted chemicals smeared around)

After trying this I can say that yes, it really does get the floor clean - not as clean as if I had scrubbed on my hands and knees but much cleaner than a quickie mop job. And no wringing, no rinsing, no dirty bucket of water. Just one pass and I'm done. It works on both linoleum and ceramic tile/grout and fits around the back of the toilet.I am also pleased with the slim profile which makes it easy to store.

A few tips: to get the floor clean you have to go SLOW. REALLY SLOW. But one pass done this way over each area is enough. Also, it won't take black shoe scuffs up. And as you go the mop cover gets saturated, leaving the last area mopped pretty wet. And to extend the life of the filter, the instructions say you should use distilled water - an additional expense.

But the upshot is that I cheerfully mop my kitchen and bathrooms twice a week now. I have been for months. Its amazing. This machine has solved one of life's true miseries (for me anyway).

love it! love it! love it!

with a household of 6, we see some serious dirt! we have ceramic tiling in most of our downstairs and it gets filthy! with young children we have big messes-and i HATE to mop, but i do have to clean it, eventually. i saved one of those eventual times for when i received my steam mop-just to see how well it would do. i am totally impressed!! this thing got up stuck on dried food-dirt-everything! and yes even more so then a reg mop. usually i have to scrub on hands and knees to get most anything stuck on, but with this i just steamed over a stuck on spot for a few secs and it came right up! just for an example-we have a dried baby cereal spot that has been there for months-that stuff is like concrete and nothing will take it up! i have tried soaking, scrubbing, scraping-all to no avail! then i held the steam mop over it for about 15 secs and most of it came up! the only thing i would recommend is getting the replacement pads when you buy it. they will get saturated with water-which is ok-it just takes longer to dry, and for the area i mopped -i really needed to change it for each room. i love the fact that when i take the pads off when i am finished that they are almost too hot too touch! boy do we feel clean! hope this helps anyone thinking about buying one of these!

Cool Product!

I saw an infomercial on TV and thought I would give the Steam Mop a try. I have tile and hardwood floors in my house that are constantly dirty from my 2 kids and dog. After using it a couple of times I am very satisfied. It only takes about 30 seconds to heat up the water, and I can control the amount of steam I put down with the trigger. The mop pads do a good job at cleaning and drying the floor, and you can throw them right into the washing machine. The Steam Mop is a nice alternative to the traditional mop and bucket. Thanks Bissell for such a great product.

Pretty Good Product

Got my steam mop today. All in all I found it to be a good product. It worked extremely well in the kitchen on the vinyl floors. Next was the foyer with ceramic tile. It worked extremly well there as well. The bathrooms went very well on textured tile. Not as well as the kitchen but viable.

I will say that you need to sweep really well. The mop cloth doesn't really pick up. It actually ended up pushing all the fine dust against the edges. It didn't take much to clean it up with a paper towel, just wish I didn't have to.

The swivel head is great. Get's into all kinds of places. Again fantastic in the kitchen and foyer but it couldn't maneuver in the tight places behind the toilet.

Overall great product. I think it beats the mop and bucket. I kind of miss the pinesol smell that gives me a sense of accomplishment. I guess clean floors will have to do.

Updated in 2008 to add--my mop is still going strong--still recommended!

From 2003:
This mop is great! A conventional mop and bucket is no comparison. It is fun to use and does a great job at cleaning my vinyl flooring. I had abandoned the old standard sponge mop and had been down on my hands and knees with a rag to get my floor spotlessly clean like I like it. NO MORE! I feel free at last! Now, my baby can crawl on the floor without me worrying about what she is getting on herself.

My three boys (14, 10, 8) tried it, too, so although it is heavier than a regular sponge mop, it is managable. The swivel head is wonderful--I even mopped between the wall and the washing machine in my laundry room--about a 7 inch space.

It is easy to assemble (my 8-year-old and I did it in 2 minutes). You just need a philips head screwdriver. If you want to hang it on the wall with the included hook, you will need a drill, and maybe some wall anchors.

Great mop!

I almost talked my wife into getting one of those Swiffer Wet Jets but after reading the countless reviews on Amazon about how horrible Swiffer products are, I decided to check out this Bissell Steam Mop.

We have hardwood floors and tile throughout our house and they definitely needed a good mopping. Wow did this mop do the trick! On one small tank of water, I mopped half the house. And it wasn't slow at all as one reviewer suggested. Perhaps the difference is that I kept a steady stream of steam going.

In any case, I love this product. The pads are reusable and the only replacement part seems to be the filter.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the pad gets really dirty really quickly. If it came with two more pads, in addition to the two it comes with, you could switch out pads regularly and be sure you're mopping up the dirt and not spreading it around. So if you're going to buy this, buy two more pads.

Worth it's weight in gold!

I'm very picky about mops and cleaners. I hadn't found a mop that could do a better job than I could on my knees with a scrubbie and a bucket of Pine-sol. I read the reviews for this product and hesitantly decided to give it a try. It is everything that it promised to be. If mine broke today, I would run right out tomorrow and buy myself another one. I would also pay twice the price if I had to--I LOVE IT THAT MUCH !! I have five children and a farm, and we know pretty much everything there is to know about dirty floors. This mop is almost a miracle. I bought an additional 2 mop cloth thingys, and I'm glad I did that. Now I always have clean ones ready at a moment's notice, even when I mop every day.

Mom's of toddlers ...."Don't think just buy it NOW!"

by R. Hayworth 2003-08-27, 40 people found this review helpful
I have a toddler so cleaning floors is an obsession with me. I totally love this product. My wood laminate floors look and feel so clean and without using any harsh chemicals. My tile floors were also sparkling.... although I still had to get on my hands and knees to clean the grout. I only have a few design complaints: the unit is a bit on the heavy side. Although I love the sturdy feel of it, it takes some energy to push around. The cord is a bit too short, I had to replug it into 3 different outlets to get my kitchen and family room done.

I'd buy the product again in a minute. Things I love: this mop comes with 2 mop cloths which are easily laundered in the washing machine and the machine is ready to steam clean within 30 seconds of plugging in. Like other reviewers, make sure that you change the cleaning pad once it becomes soiled (and it will no matter how clean you thought you're floors were) otherwise it's like pushing a dirty mop around, also make sure you sweep or vaccum your floors thoroughly before mopping.

good quality, well made, works as advertised

This is a very nice appliance. It's made of heavy white plastic, so it looks very clean and it feels very solidly made. It's easy to put together, just two screws and a little common sense should do it. I thought it would make more steam, like clouds of steam. But it does not seem to generate a whole lot even though it really does get my white ceramic tile floors nice and clean. I love the swivel head because it DOES fit into the space between the wall and the toilet. Plus you can swivel it right up against the wall. It also fits under low furniture. The pads are really thick and very durable. It steams for about at least 20 minutes before you have to refill with water. That's plenty of mopping time. And anyway, refilling the water tank is very easy and it heats up again in no time.

I would have given it five stars except for one thing, it is a little bit heavy. I don't know if it should be lighter, after all it has to be durable and not flimsy. And it is durable and sturdy. However because of the weight, it's not something you can just whip out and zip around like a Swiffer Wet Jet. However, it cleans better than the Wet Jet and you don't have to smell the strong cleaning solution. So if you mop once or twice a week and you are not in a total rush, you will really like the Bissel Steam Mop.
